Word-for-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

VERSE #1:
在這刻 心中掛念誰
At this moment, who is on your mind
漫長夜是否笑著而睡
In those long nights, do you fall asleep with a smile
下雨天 可影響你情和緒
Rainy days, do they affect your mood?
唯願我是每步貼身伴隨
I only wish I could follow you every step of the way

VERSE #2:
若我可 不管你是誰
If only I could ignore who you are
為何負擔那份疑慮
Why burden [myself with] those doubts and worries?
願我可 不分好友和情侶
I wish I didn’t have to think about whether we are good friends or a couple
仍是世上最愉快的一對
[as long as] we remain the happiest pair in the whole world

CHORUS #1:
陪著你 一千種不放心
Standing by you, [there’s] a thousand kinds of worries,
一千種的吸引 少一點關注
a thousand kinds of attraction. Losing even a little less attention [from you]
仍然令我不放心 怎麼樣擔心
still makes me feel uneasy. How can I worry in ways
你會肯相信 這叫為情所困
that will make you willing to believe that it is called being love-stricken?

VERSE #3:
讓我知 此刻你為誰
Let me know, at this exact moment for whom
還為甚麼笑著流淚
and for what are you shedding tears and smiling at the same time?
願我可 遮掩感覺和情緒
I wish I could conceal my feelings and emotions
無奈這是愛著你的根據
Sorry but that’s the evidence of loving you

CHORUS #1

VERSE #4:
如何利用這不安感覺去換來熱愛
How can I trade my anxieties for [your] adoration?
卻也更難安心的離開
But [if that ever happened] it would be harder for me to leave [you] with a peaceful mind

CHORUS #2:
陪著你 一千種不放心
Standing by you, [there’s] a thousand kinds of worries,
一千種的吸引 少一點關注
a thousand kinds of attraction. Losing even a little less attention [from you]
仍然令我不放心 怎麼樣擔心
still gives me misgivings. However I worry
仍然可感到 那份甜蜜與興奮
I can still feel the sweetness and excitement [of loving you]

CHORUS #2

全世界誰傾聽你-林宥嘉 (I Belonged to You-Yoga Lin)

Lyricist: Francis Li/Li Zhuoxiong
作曲:梁翹柏
Composer: Kubert Leung/Liang Qiaobo
演唱:林宥嘉
Singer: Yoga Lin/Lin Youjia
出版者:華研國際
Publisher: HIM International Music Inc.

The Chinese title of the song literally means “In the Whole World Who Listens to You.” I think “Who in the Whole World Listens to You” is a better title.

This song is a soundtrack for the 2016 movie “I Belonged to You.” The Chinese movie title literally means “Pass by Your Whole World.”

Word-for-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

VERSE #1:
多希望有一個像你的人
How I wish there would be someone like you
但黃昏跟清晨無法相認
But the fall of dusk and the break of dawn are unable to acknowledge each other

[Note: This line employs an analogy to imply the great difficulty of being in a relationship of one’s dreams: It is as difficult as having the dusk and the dawn meet and recognize each other.]

雨停了 歌停了 風繼續
The rain stopped, the song ended, [but] the wind continued
雨傘又遺落原地
The umbrella was left at the original spot

VERSE #2:
多希望你就是最後的人
How I wish you would be the last person

[Note: This line means “How I wish you would be my spouse.”]

但年輪和青春不忍相認
But tree rings and youth can’t bear to acknowledge each other

[Note: The lyricist juxtaposes the growth rings—a symbol of age—and youth and personifies them as the first verse does to “the fall of dusk” and “the break of dawn.”]

一盞燈 一座城 找一人
A lamp, a city, search for a person

一路的顛沛流離
Wander about in a desperate plight

CHORUS #1:
從你的全世界路過
I passed by your whole world
把全盛的我都活過
I had the days when I was in full bloom
請往前走 不必回頭
Please go ahead—there is no need to turn back
在終點等你的人會是我
The person waiting for you at the destination will be me

VERSE #2

CHORUS #2
從你的全世界路過
I passed by your whole world
把全盛的愛都活過
I had the days when love was in full bloom
我始終沒說 不增加你負荷
But I never told you, [to] not add to your burden
最後等你的人是我
The one who will wait for you till the last moment is me

CHORUS #1

VERSE #3:
你愛默默傾聽全世界
You love listening quietly to the whole world
全世界誰傾聽你
In the whole world who listens to you
一朵一朵一首一首的 曾經
Every flower and every song of [your] past

[Note: This evocative verse asks the love interest as well as the reader if they suffer from loneliness. The images of the flowers that carried one’s past experiences poetically correspond to the previous verse that says “I had the days when I was in full bloom.” “[E]very song of [your] past,” on the other hand, tallies with the storyline of “I Belonged to You” which revolves around two radio disc jockeys.]

Word-for-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

VERSE #1:
輕輕柔柔一陣風 有甜甜的香
A current of gentle breeze, exudes a sweet fragrance
搖搖晃晃一棵心 追愛到遠方
A wiggling heart, chasing love toward a far off place
你一出現 仿佛世界都發亮
When you show up, it seems as if the whole world were lit up
像燦爛陽光 教我怎麽擋
[You] are like the bright sunshine; how can I ever block you out?

VERSE #2:
柔柔小小的手上 應該抱著花
[Your] soft, small hands, should be holding a bouquet
靜靜悄悄的晚上 適合說情話
[On] the quiet, serene night, whispers of love befit the occassion
浪漫像酒 最好閉上眼睛嘗
Romance is like the wine; you’d better taste it closing your eyes
太清醒怎麽 能夠感受它
[If you were] too sober, how could you fully savor it?

CHORUS:
我要閉上眼睛 記住你的香
I want to close my eyes and remember your sweet fragrance
你要閉上眼睛 靠在我的肩膀
You need to close your eyes and lean on my shoulder
想像自己是大海 別怕愛卷起浪花
Imagine that [we] are an ocean, don’t be afraid when love makes waves
要釋放溫柔 讓感覺去飛翔
[We] should release our gentleness and let our feelings take to air

我要閉上眼睛 記住你的香
I want to close my eyes and remember your sweet fragrance
你要閉上眼睛 靠在我的肩膀
You need to close your eyes and lean on my shoulder
我心一點一點醉 臉頰胸口都發燙
My heart gradually gets boozed-up, my cheeks and chest burning hot
用心去感覺 多愛不必講
Feel it with the heart; there is no need to verbalize the depth of our love

Word-by-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

[Note: A literal translation of the song title is “Us.”]

VERSE #1:
陽光刺眼抱著洗好的相片
The sunshine is glaring. I held the newly-developed photos
好想讓時間走得慢一點
How I wish that time slowed down a bit
多點一杯熱湯霧氣裏想象
I ordered an extra cup of warm soup, musing in its hot steam
多少快樂我試著去遺忘
How many happy memories did I try to erase?

VERSE #2:
如果聽見我不小心說了謊
If you happened to hear that I lied by mistake
希望你可以為了我假裝
I hope you can pretend [I told the truth] for me
不過是到明天換一個地方
It was just switching to a new place the next day
我感覺你不肯講的慌張
[But] I felt your anxiety which you wouldn’t explain

CHORUS:
我笑著遠遠看著你追往風的方向
I smiled gazing at you chasing the wind
曾經開心的指著櫥窗買走夢想
[We] once pointed at the shop window and happily bought our dreams
怎麽愛情都沒有經過最後一晚
How come love never sustains the last night?
感覺一下不快樂又何妨
Why can’t one feel sorrow once in a while?

VERSE #2

CHORUS x2

想起我們分手時快天亮
I recalled it was almost the break of dawn when we parted ways
笑或不笑淚水不能衡量
Whether we smiled or not, tears can’t measure [the meaning of our breakup]

[Note: This song was included in Wallace Chung’s 1998 album Adore. Wallace once said he had a soft spot for this song. I guess this song is about a disheartening love story: Two like-minded people severed a beautiful romantic relationship. They broke up in their last trip together. The day before they went to the place where the woman planned the breakup, the man felt the woman’s anxiety but he couldn’t draw out the reticent girlfriend. It is possible that the man is Wallace himself. As for the lie, I guess it refers to claiming to be single or denying a former relationship. Wallace hoped that the ex-girlfriend would not bust the lie.

Or maybe my guess is totally wrong—maybe the story is fictitious; maybe the man was watching himself chasing the wind and he was the one who broke up with the girlfriend to pursue his dreams…Again, this song is open to various interpretations.]

[The literal translation of the song title is “[It’s] So My Style.”]

VERSE #1:
你 點了一杯
You, ordered the same kind
和我一樣的咖啡
of coffee as mine
有沒有什麽曖昧
Is there something going on between us?

VERSE #2:
失眠 眼圈太黑
Insomnia, the circles under the eyes are too dark
TiRaMiSu後睡一會
Get some zzz’s after having the tiramisu
也沒什麽不對
There is nothing wrong with doing that
偶爾讓可樂
Occasionally we will also invite the coke
也來聊聊是非
to join the schmooze

CHORUS:
很像我的分析
[It’s] just like my analysis
有太多邏輯
overtly laden with logic
討厭去照顧誰的情緒
[I] hate to be considerate of others’ feelings

很像我的國語
Just like my Mandarin
學著說道理
[When I] learn to make sense in it
全天下的問題都無敵
All problems of the world are insurmountable

VERSE #3:
很像我
Just like
不會說話的表情
my facial expression when I make tactless remarks
很像我
Just like how I am
無法解釋他的心
unable to explicate others’ minds

VERSE #4:
永遠沒秘密
Never have secrets
習慣隨心所欲
Already used to following my heart
我愛我自己
I love myself
請給我新鮮的空氣
Please give me fresh air

我不能愛上你
I must not fall in love with you

CHORUS x2

[Note: This song reveals a lot about how Wallace looked at himself back in the late 1990s when he was 22-23 years old. He unapologetically insisted on being himself, though he did feel a little self-conscious about his Mandarin, childlike candor, and tactless remarks. His self-evaluation is presented through a woman who analyzes like him, speaks Mandarin like him, and even orders coffee like him. Obviously Wallace had a pretty good idea of who he was and asked for tolerance of his idiosyncracies. He loved himself and even warned himself not to be too self-indulgent (“I must not fall in love with you”). Well, it would be hard not to fall in love with a creative soul who fantasizes gossiping with a cup of coke!

Years went by, Wallace changed. Now he is a seaoned singer and actor, fluent in Mandarin, forever considerate and tactful, and keeps some innocuous secrets. What hasn’t changed is his boundless imagination. And his determination to “sing for life!”]

VERSE #1:
你丟掉 自己一直最心愛的玩具
You threw away the toy that had been your favorite of all time
當它陳舊 再也不能 給你驚喜

多想再聽一次 你天真的問候
How I wish to hear once more, your simple and unaffected greeting
讓我說 你快樂而沉默
Let me say [this], you are [now] happy and quiet

你好不好 我很想知道
How are you? I really want to know

VERSE #3:
有一天 也許你 發現還愛著我
One day, you might discover that you still love me
我一樣 會握你的雙手
[Then] I would still hold your hands
還是我嗎 我想知道
Would [your love] still be me? I want to know it

[Note: I thought this song would be easy to translate but I was wrong. The lyrics consist of succint, polysemous sentences. As a result, I thought long and hard what the story was about. Here is my guess: An independent and mature woman asked for a break because she wanted more freedom. The couple remained friends after the breakup but they didn’t talk to each other. The man is waiting for a reunion. The parts that I feel most uncertain about are “If you ask me, I will say you are now happy and reticent” and “…as a friend, but our connection is never severed.” Let me know if you have different interpretations.]
