VERSE #1:
Wǒ yǐncángzhe mùguāng dài tiānxià fēngqǐyúnyǒng shí kuángfàng
I hide my gaze, waiting to go wild amid rising winds and scudding clouds [idiom for turbulent times]

wǒ zì shǎng yīzhī gū fāng kě tiānyá hé chù yǒu nǐ de fà xiāng
I admire myself like a lonesome blossom, but where in the whole world would I catch a whiff of the fragrance of your hair?

tiān wèi liàng yáoyuǎn bǐfāng shì fēnghuǒ shāo jǐn chéngshì cànlàn guòwǎng
Before daybreak, in a far-off land, flames of war engulfed a city’s glorious past

nǐ yùyán de shāchǎng yǒu āishāng liútǎng zài huángtǔ zhī shàng
Over the battlefield you envisioned, bereavement flowed on the yellow earth

CHORUS:
wéi zhàn ér zhàn wéi shèng ér chàng wèi nǐ dǐdǎng
[I] fight the fight, sing for victory, ward off [the enemy] for you

duì yuè yǎngwàng duì tiān nàhǎn duì nǐ fēngkuáng
[I] look up at the moon, scream at the sky, go crazy for you

kuījiǎ jiānbǎng huāngliáng bēizhuàng bié wàngjì wǒ múyàng
Armors and shoulders, are bleak and solemn, do not forget my appearance

wú wǒ wúmíng wúcháng
No self, no fame, no permanence

VERSE #2:
cóngcǐ suí wǒ de xìngshì
From now on, take my last name

cóngcǐ duàn mángmáng guītú
From now on, cut off your bleak way home

biéyuàn xiǎo xiàng zuìshēn chù
A secluded yard hidden deep in the valley

wǒ huíshǒu lái shí lù
I looked back on the path whereby I arrived here

hé lái fánhuā de xiāozhǎng
Since when do blossoms wax and wane?

lièrì dāng kōngxīn zhuóshāng
With the scorching sun directly overhead, my heart is charred

wǒ yǒng bù xiāng fù
I will never let you down

CHORUS

wú wǒ wúmíng wúcháng
No self, no fame, no permanence

Translation for Singers

VERSE #1:
I’m waiting for the time, when the clouds scud and the winds arise
I’m self indulgent, but how can I catch a whiff of your fragrance?
In a land truly afar, the flames of war engulf whatever we have
You’ve seen this coming, that sorrow follows anywhere we go

CHORUS:
I fight for you, I vow to win, I want you back
the stars saw me, the sky heard me, you are the one
If I were gone, would you erase my name off your mind?
Love you forever and ever

VERSE #2:
Let me bring back your smile
I will never make you cry
I havn known you from childhood
I can still hear your laugh
When did we lose contact?
The rift is scorching my heart
But I don’t give up

CHORUS

Love you forever and ever

Word-for-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

VERSE #1:
At this moment, who is on your mind
In those long nights, do you fall asleep with a smile
Rainy days, do they affect your mood?
I only wish I could follow you every step of the way

VERSE #2:
If only I could ignore who you are
Why burden [myself with] those doubts and worries?
I wish I didn’t have to think about whether we are good friends or a couple
[as long as] we remain the happiest pair in the whole world

CHORUS #1:
Standing by you, [there’s] a thousand kinds of worries,
a thousand kinds of attraction. Losing even a little less attention [from you]
still makes me feel uneasy. How can I worry in ways
that will make you willing to believe that it is called being love-stricken?

VERSE #3:
Let me know, at this exact moment for whom
and for what are you shedding tears and smiling at the same time?
I wish I could conceal my feelings and emotions
Sorry but that’s the evidence of loving you

CHORUS #1

VERSE #4:
How can I trade my anxieties for [your] adoration?
But [if that ever happened] it would be harder for me to leave [you] with a peaceful mind

CHORUS #2:
Standing by you, [there’s] a thousand kinds of worries,
a thousand kinds of attraction. Losing even a little less attention [from you]
still gives me misgivings. However I worry
I can still feel the sweetness and excitement [of loving you]

(I Belonged to You-Yoga Lin)

i-belonged-to-you
Designed by Rensi

Lyricist: Francis Li/Li Zhuoxiong
Composer: Kubert Leung/Liang Qiaobo
Singer: Yoga Lin/Lin Youjia
Publisher: HIM International Music Inc.

The Chinese title of the song literally means “In the Whole World Who Listens to You.” I think “Who in the Whole World Listens to You” is a better title.

This song is a soundtrack for the 2016 movie “I Belonged to You.” The Chinese movie title literally means “Pass by Your Whole World.”

Word-for-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

VERSE #1:
How I wish there would be someone like you
But the fall of dusk and the break of dawn are unable to acknowledge each other

[Note: This line employs an analogy to imply the great difficulty of being in a relationship of one’s dreams: It is as difficult as having the dusk and the dawn meet and recognize each other.]

The rain stopped, the song ended, [but] the wind continued
The umbrella was left at the original spot

VERSE #2:
How I wish you would be the last person

[Note: This line means “How I wish you would be my spouse.”]

But tree rings and youth can’t bear to acknowledge each other

[Note: The lyricist juxtaposes the growth rings—a symbol of age—and youth and personifies them as the first verse does to “the fall of dusk” and “the break of dawn.”]

A lamp, a city, search for a person

Wander about in a desperate plight

CHORUS #1:
I passed by your whole world
I had the days when I was in full bloom
Please go ahead—there is no need to turn back
The person waiting for you at the destination will be me

VERSE #2

CHORUS #2
I passed by your whole world
I had the days when love was in full bloom
But I never told you, [to] not add to your burden
The one who will wait for you till the last moment is me

CHORUS #1

VERSE #3:
You love listening quietly to the whole world
In the whole world who listens to you
Every flower and every song of [your] past

[Note: This evocative verse asks the love interest as well as the reader if they suffer from loneliness. The images of the flowers that carried one’s past experiences poetically correspond to the previous verse that says “I had the days when I was in full bloom.” “[E]very song of [your] past,” on the other hand, tallies with the storyline of “I Belonged to You” which revolves around two radio disc jockeys.]

But I never told you; I don’t want to burden you
But I will be the one waiting for you till the end

CHORUS #1

VERSE #3:
You love listening quietly to the whole world
But who in the whole world listens to you
Every flower and every song of your past

CHORUS #2

CHORUS #1

Please go ahead—there is no need to turn back
I will be the one wating for you at the destination

Word-for-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

VERSE #1:
A current of gentle breeze, exudes a sweet fragrance
A wiggling heart, chasing love toward a far off place
When you show up, it seems as if the whole world were lit up
[You] are like the bright sunshine; how can I ever block you out?

VERSE #2:
[Your] soft, small hands, should be holding a bouquet
[On] the quiet, serene night, whispers of love befit the occassion
Romance is like the wine; you’d better taste it closing your eyes
[If you were] too sober, how could you fully savor it?

CHORUS:
I want to close my eyes and remember your sweet fragrance
You need to close your eyes and lean on my shoulder
Imagine that [we] are an ocean, don’t be afraid when love makes waves
[We] should release our gentleness and let our feelings take to air

I want to close my eyes and remember your sweet fragrance
You need to close your eyes and lean on my shoulder
My heart gradually gets boozed-up, my cheeks and chest burning hot
Feel it with the heart; there is no need to verbalize the depth of our love

VERSE #2

CHORUS

Wallace Chung covered this song at his 2006 birthday party. Follow this link to watch the video.

Word-by-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

[Note: A literal translation of the song title is “Us.”]

VERSE #1:
The sunshine is glaring. I held the newly-developed photos
How I wish that time slowed down a bit
I ordered an extra cup of warm soup, musing in its hot steam
How many happy memories did I try to erase?

VERSE #2:
If you happened to hear that I lied by mistake
I hope you can pretend [I told the truth] for me
It was just switching to a new place the next day
[But] I felt your anxiety which you wouldn’t explain

CHORUS:
I smiled gazing at you chasing the wind
[We] once pointed at the shop window and happily bought our dreams
How come love never sustains the last night?
Why can’t one feel sorrow once in a while?

VERSE #2

CHORUS x2

I recalled it was almost the break of dawn when we parted ways
Whether we smiled or not, tears can’t measure [the meaning of our breakup]

[Note: This song was included in Wallace Chung’s 1998 album Adore. Wallace once said he had a soft spot for this song. I guess this song is about a disheartening love story: Two like-minded people severed a beautiful romantic relationship. They broke up in their last trip together. The day before they went to the place where the woman planned the breakup, the man felt the woman’s anxiety but he couldn’t draw out the reticent girlfriend. It is possible that the man is Wallace himself. As for the lie, I guess it refers to claiming to be single or denying a former relationship. Wallace hoped that the ex-girlfriend would not bust the lie.

Or maybe my guess is totally wrong—maybe the story is fictitious; maybe the man was watching himself chasing the wind and he was the one who broke up with the girlfriend to pursue his dreams…Again, this song is open to various interpretations.]
