Life Sucks-Jolin Tsai

Jolin Tsai’s 2018 burnout song is quite therapeutic.

Lyricist: Wang Yongliang/Tom Wang
Sam Fishman/Jazelle Rodriguez/Samual Petersen
Composers: Sam Fishman, Jazelle Rodriguez, and Samual Petersen
Arrangers: Chen Xinghan/Star Chen and Zheng Renhao
Singer: Cai Yilin/Jolin Tsai

I don’t want to get up, go to bed, change my underwear or take a shower.
I loath myself, grieve for myself, pity myself, and give up therapy [give up on myself]. The system malfunctions. Noise jamming.

Life sucks, romance dies, there is no grief greater than apathy, and the whole body is shut down except my glazed eyes.

In the love department, I’m lonely and suffering; in the life department, I bow and scrape for five pecks of rice [make compromises to get by].
When I’m not in luck, there are always idiots barging in to make a scene [when it rains, it pours], and I need time to digest these dark jokes.

It’s well said that wherever you fall, you should just stay horizontal. Being negative is good. Negativity helps. Life has its ups and downs.
It’s well said that when it’s not your year, you should just treat it as a time to take a dump [to flush your bad luck away]. Being negative is good. Shake hands with negativity, and then all the old scores can be written off.

It’s well said that wherever you fall, you should just stay horizontal. Being negative is good. Negativity helps. Life has its ups and downs.
It’s well said that wherever you fall, you should just stay horizontal. Being negative is good. It’s good to embrace negativity and then part with it.

If you don’t want to fake a smile, it’s good to sulk. If you intend to make trouble, you don’t have to pretend to be polite.
When sorrow goes deep, it cuts your heart and ends all your woes; your hormones are out of whack, and your brain refuses to be rational.

When I’m not in luck, there are always idiots barging in to make a scene [when it rains, it pours]. You need to take a break and think. Fate is baffling.

Once you are well-rested, you can resume winding the clock [gearing up]. Once you are done with feeling down in the dumps, you can try to limber up the joints [stretch].
Once you are done with all this negativity, you can say goodbye to your worries. As long as you are alive, you are not running out of hope. Everything is a kind of therapy.

Slowly Growing Fond of You-Karen Mok

I met a Karen Mok fan online through a feminist group lately. We raved about Karen Mok’s charisma and unique voice. Then I started listening to her songs again…

Love ballads in Mandopop usually target straight couples, but I’m growing tired of such heterosexual norms. Imagine the song is for LGBTQ+ couples, and you may enjoy the song better.

Karen Mok is currently working on her musical. I truly hope that all her dreams come true.

Between infinity and the boisterous midnight
when we were 17 years old, which side did we take?
Before the future unfolded, [the ones that were] full of anticipation and the apprehension about getting hurt

Singable English Version

VERSE #1:
I’m waiting for the time, when the clouds scud and the winds arise
I’m self indulgent, but how can I catch a whiff of your fragrance?
In a land truly afar, the flames of war engulf whatever we have
You’ve seen this coming, that sorrow follows anywhere we go

CHORUS:
I fight for you, I vow to win, I want you back
the stars saw me, the sky heard me, you are the one
If I were gone, would you erase my name off your mind?
Love you forever and ever

VERSE #2:
Let me bring back your smile
I will never make you cry
I havn known you from childhood
I can still hear your laugh
When did we lose contact?
The rift is scorching my heart
But I don’t give up

CHORUS

Love you forever and ever

(I Belonged to You-Yoga Lin)

i-belonged-to-you
Designed by Haha

Lyricist: Francis Li/Li Zhuoxiong
Composer: Kubert Leung/Liang Qiaobo
Singer: Yoga Lin/Lin Youjia
Publisher: HIM International Music Inc.

The Chinese title of the song literally means “In the Whole World Who Listens to You.” I think “Who in the Whole World Listens to You” is a better title.

This song is a soundtrack for the 2016 movie “I Belonged to You.” The Chinese movie title literally means “Pass by Your Whole World.”

Word-for-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

VERSE #1:
How I wish there would be someone like you
But the fall of dusk and the break of dawn are unable to acknowledge each other

[Note: This line employs an analogy to imply the great difficulty of being in a relationship of one’s dreams: It is as difficult as having the dusk and the dawn meet and recognize each other.]

The rain stopped, the song ended, [but] the wind continued
The umbrella was left at the original spot

VERSE #2:
How I wish you would be the last person

[Note: This line means “How I wish you would be my spouse.”]

But tree rings and youth can’t bear to recognize each other

[Note: The lyricist juxtaposes the growth rings—a symbol of age—and youth and personifies them as the first verse does to “the fall of dusk” and “the break of dawn.”]

A lamp, a city, search for a person

Wander about in a desperate plight

CHORUS #1:
I passed by your whole world
I had the days when I was in full bloom
Please go ahead—there is no need to turn back
The person waiting for you at the destination will be me

VERSE #2

CHORUS #2
I passed by your whole world
I had the days when love was in full bloom
But I never told you, [to] not further burden you
The one who will wait for you till the last moment is me

CHORUS #1

VERSE #3:
You love listening quietly to the whole world
In the whole world who listens to you
Every flower and every song of [your] past

[Note: This evocative verse asks the love interest as well as the reader if they suffer from loneliness. The images of the flowers that carried one’s past experiences poetically correspond to the previous verse that says “I had the days when I was in full bloom.” “[E]very song of [your] past,” on the other hand, tallies with the storyline of “I Belonged to You” which revolves around two radio disc jockeys.]

You need to close your eyes and lean on my shoulder
Imagine that [we] are an ocean, don’t be afraid when love makes waves
[We] should release our gentleness and let our feelings take to air

Word-by-Word Translation for Chinese Learners:

[Note: A literal translation of the song title is “Us.”]

VERSE #1:
The sunshine is glaring. I held the newly-developed photos
How I wish that time slowed down a bit
I ordered an extra cup of warm soup, musing in its hot steam
How many happy memories did I try to erase?

VERSE #2:
If you happened to hear that I accidentally told a lie
I hope you can pretend [I told the truth] for me
It was just switching to a new place the next day
[But] I felt your anxiety which you wouldn’t explain

CHORUS:
I smiled gazing at you chasing the wind
[We] once pointed at the shop window and happily bought our dreams
How come love never sustains the last night?
Why can’t one feel sorrow once in a while?

VERSE #2

CHORUS x2

I recalled it was almost the break of dawn when we parted ways
Whether we smiled or not, tears can’t measure [the meaning of our breakup]

[Note: This song was included in Wallace Chung’s 1998 album Adore. Wallace once said he had a soft spot for this song. I guess this song is about a disheartening love story: Two like-minded people severed a beautiful romantic relationship. They broke up in their last trip together. The day before they went to the place where the woman planned the breakup, the man felt the woman’s anxiety but he couldn’t draw out the reticent girlfriend. It is possible that the man is Wallace himself. As for the lie, I guess it refers to claiming to be single or denying a former relationship. Wallace hoped that the ex-girlfriend would not bust the lie.

Or maybe my guess is totally wrong—maybe the story is fictitious; maybe the man was watching himself chasing the wind and he was the one who broke up with the girlfriend to pursue his dreams…Again, this song is open to various interpretations.]

Translation for Chinese Learners:

感覺夠-鍾漢良 (Feeling Pumped-Wallace Chung)

[Note: Literally “feeling enough,” the title “feeling pumped/ready” points to one’s visceral response to life situations. Wallace Chung is a pretty intuitive person. I think he wants to convey this message via the song: When you listen to your heart, you can make decisions rather easily. Connect with like-minded people, and you will reach your goals.]

VERSE #1:
At the break of dawn, hold onto me
Loneliness will move past by [us]
Now, future, or some other day, we will make plans online
hold me close

VERSE #2:
[According to] the eternal, perpetual laws and legends
Hearts can take off
It is your and my and our lifelong expectations

VERSE #3:
Say it quietly, don’t point this out frankly:
故事早晚都會有結果
Every story will reach its end sooner or later
Accept the results whatever they are but don’t feel that you have everything figured out
Learn to stay silent
[But] go all out and keep up with the rhythm

CHORUS:
[When you] feel pumped, you won’t catch on fire even when you traverse the equator
[When we] confront each other, we will know what’s on our minds. Don’t reject the self [the inner voice]

[When you] feel pumped, even when you are alone hunching over in the desert
[You will keep the faith that] the oasis is ahead of you. Hand in hand, you can forge ahead bravely

Whatever you want to say, keep it to yourself, don’t say it

(Sing for Life-Wallace Chung)

(Lyrics: Rao Huibing)
(Composer: Jia Wang)
(Arrangements: George Leong/Liang Bojun)
(Singer: Wallace Chung/Zhong Hanliang)
(Publisher: Cornucopia Music)

[Chewy Won created the MV with English subtitles for me (Thank you, Chewy!). You may view it here.]

VERSE #1:
Are you tired? Always dissembling happiness as if you were an actor
I, an audience member, who would occasionally be carried away
am, deservedly, all muddle-headed

VERSE #2:
Lovable? The ever-smiling loved ones
Sadly, I am still groping for joy, struggling to enjoy life
If I were not to go big, I would be fine with being small

CHORUS:
I am disconcerted, when facing my love, the right person, and confronting my life
If it is meant to be, there is no need to ask others
I can make decisions for myself, regarding the one I love, that person

VERSE #3:
Could you accompany me to act out the life script and approach the breaks?
Join me. Who will envy us for enjoying life—
you haven’t got it yet, but I have long had the answer

CHORUS

Could you accompany me to act out the life script and approach the breaks?
Join me. Who will envy us for enjoying life—
don’t tell me you don’t know yet. You should know it

I want you to understand it

I am lost in my train of thought, when facing my love, the right person, and trying to live my life conscientiously
If I don’t belong with them, there is absolutely no need to ask them
I make choices for myself, I am, that decision-maker

[Note: The song title literrally means “enjoy life” or “flip about and enjoy life”. The difference lies in how to interpret the second character 作. If interpreted as a popular Internet slang term, 作 [zuō], it means to take a walk on the wild side to vivify life. Although the character is pronounced as 作 [zuò] in the MV teaser, I think the song contains the meaning of the character as an Internet slang term.]
